National platform identifies animals with cancer
From today, Friday December 6th, a pioneering platform for registering animals with cancer is available. It's calledVet-OncoNet andwas developed byAbel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS)and byPorto Public Health Institute (ISPUP)and will aggregate information about animal cancer to understand the frequency of these cases and study the main risk factors.
In addition to animal health, this platform also promises to be very useful for human and environmental health. According to those responsible, as pets share the same environment as their owners, the development of an oncological disease in animals can be a warning sign with increased risk for humans.
The forecast is that the project may be extended to large species, including production animals.
