Farma2care: a project with users in mind

THESão João Hospital CenterThis Sunday, December 1st, began a project that will allow chronically ill patients who usually collect their medication at the hospital to do so at pharmacies in their area of ​​residence, in the cities of Braga, Viana do Castelo, Maia and Valongo, in Porto.

THEFarma2careis a project ofSão João University Hospital Center (CHUSJ), in partnership with the Order of Pharmacists, the National Association of Pharmacies (ANF) and the Association of Pharmaceutical Distributors (ADIFA).

In this first phase, only patients with HIV/AIDS infection are covered, but the program foresees an extension, in 2020, to other diseases and geographic areas, for patients followed by the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João, in Porto.

“What happens with this program is that patients who live some distance from ‘São João’ and who usually have to come here to collect their medication can, being in areas where there are pharmacies covered by the program, start regularly collecting their medication at a pharmacy of their convenience, with total freedom of choice, within the available pharmacies”, explained to Lusa, the person responsible for the project, Carlos Lima Alves, from the Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Resistance Unit at CHSJ.

This partnership emerged similar to the program already implemented inLisbon Central Hospital Center, in which the real benefit for patients can be confirmed, as well as the valorization of the role of community pharmacies as agents of care provision.

The initiative will be implemented in phases and already has almost a hundred interested pharmacies.
