Biophilic Design: the outside in the inside

Biophilia. A pompous and somewhat far-fetched cliché that means “love of life” or “conservation instinct”. First used by the German psychoanalyst, sociologist and philosopher, Erich Fromm, this feminine name is at the origin of the concept behind Biophilic Design. Although the term is relatively recent, its application has gained popularity and followers over several centuries. The truth is that the need to separate urban life from the surrounding natural environment was only felt at the beginning of the 18th century, a period that marks the beginning of the first Industrial Revolution. Until then, built space was influenced by interactions with nature and the spatial properties of the landscapes that surrounded it.
Reaching the scientific consensus that more than 90% of human beings associate nature with widespread physical and psychological well-being, in recent decades, many architects and designers have once again begun to look for ways to include natural elements in new projects, breaking a barrier that had been established for more than 250 years.

Biophilic Design, today
After modern society recognized a growing disconnection with the natural world, there was a need to explore the use of natural elements in urban development and the definition of interior spaces. Today, Biophilic Design serves the purpose of creating amultisensoryfor those looking for a refuge, within four walls. It is, therefore, a concept that implies the design of internal environments that prioritize natural elements, both in obvious and subtle ways.
Thus, in Biophilic Design, the experience of indirect nature can be stimulated through the inclusion of plants, water flows, images, aromas, sounds or natural forms in interior spaces. This can happen through a variety of means, and patterns or structural elements can even be developed, capable of transporting the occupants of a given space to a completely different environment, as can be seen in the example below, from the Qatar Museum Gift Shop:

Briefly, in interior design, Biophilic Design can be applied in 3 different ways:

Incorporate natural elements into the design (whether materials such as cork or decorative details such as plants, water flows, etc.);

Replicate shapes or textures that reflect elements and environments of nature;

Reproduce, accurately, a layout typically associated with nature.
Biophilic Design in commercial environments
THEinterior designIt hasn’t been the same since biophilia came onto the scene. Currently, built environments are designed to satisfy the needs of those who use them, actively contributing to their well-being. In environments dedicated to the provision of healthcare services and care, Biophilic Design is a way of reducing the levels of stress and anxiety of users and healthcare professionals. Connecting with nature – even indirectly – stimulates all of the human senses, meeting an innate need for peace and relaxation. The truth is that any interior space shines and comes to life when natural elements, such as wood or water, are introduced. Furthermore, it is scientifically proven that Biophilic Design stimulates cognitive capacity and creativity, essential effects for the provision of services in the health sector.
