Neuroaesthetics: space as an agent of well-being
Interior design is undergoing a silent but profound transformation.
Neuroaesthetics — a discipline that studies aesthetic perception through neuroscience — emerges as an essential tool for understanding the impact of built environments on the human brain, emotions and well-being. In this article, we explain how this approach is changing interior design.
The science behind aesthetics
The term neuroaesthetics was created by the neuroscientistSemir Zekiin the late 90s. At the time, Zeki, a professor at University College London, was investigating how the brain reacts to visual art. Over time, the concept evolved and began to include other aesthetic stimuli, such as architectural space.
According to the researcher, the perception of beauty is linked to the activation of specific areas of the brain, which attribute emotional value and trigger feelings of reward. In other words, what we consider beautiful has a direct impact on our biology.
Neuroaesthetics in practice
Neuroaesthetics seeks to understand how the elements of a space — such as natural light, color palette, textures and organization — affect our emotional, cognitive and physiological states. Furthermore, recent studies, such as those published inGlobal Research and Innovation Publications, show that these factors directly influence cortisol and dopamine levels. As a result, the design can improve the feeling of comfort, security and focus on daily activities.

A new look at interior projects
This knowledge has been increasingly applied in hospitals, clinics and work environments. For example, platforms likeArchDailypresent projects in which lighting, materials and even furniture are designed to positively stimulate the nervous system. In this way, interior design evolves beyond function or traditional aesthetics: it becomes a therapeutic, cognitive and emotional tool.
