Pharmacy Design: MEDD’s perspective!

1. What are the most relevant aspects when remodeling a pharmacy?

The optimization, functionality and profitability of the space. We know what to do to make a space more profitable and functional. In anyremodeling project, it is essential to start by identifying the deficiencies of the space and the owner's objectives and then developing tailor-made solutions. To be effective, the result must bring competitive advantages to the pharmacy.

1. During the project, which area of ​​the pharmacy generally requires the most attention?

All areas are fundamental and require the same attention. However, the point of sale is generally the area that most interests owners, being the one that offers the greatest return and where much of the pharmaceutical activity takes place. However, we cannot disregard the functionality of a backoffice (a fundamental aspect for streamlining workflows) or the importance of a mere storage space. Ultimately, all areas have their function and respective importance.

1. Do you consider that Portuguese pharmacists have shown greater interest in remodeling in the last decade? Why?

Over the last 15 years, the Portuguese market has been changing. Not long ago, pharmaceutical activity was more focused on counseling and selling medicines to the community. Today, the scenario is different. The owners of Portuguese pharmacies seek to offer more to their users. A more complete and exclusive shopping experience, where design is increasingly seen as a resource that is at the service of health.

1. What distinguishes the design of Portuguese pharmacies from the design of French pharmacies?

Each community has its own tastes and traditions. There is no way to compare or distinguish. Obviously, the choice of materials or the selection of the color system are aspects that vary, which means that each project requires an extensive and detailed market study. A situation that happens even on national territory. In other words, a pharmacy located in the north of the country is not the same as a pharmacy located in the south of the country. The experiences and objectives of the owners dictate the way in which each architectural or design solution develops, regardless of the country or region where we work.

1. It is known that independent pharmacies have greater freedom in interior design than establishments belonging to large pharmaceutical groups. Do they make use of this freedom or remain conservative and traditional?

There is a little bit of everything. People who are more conservative and people who try to be more daring. Many pharmacies are independent precisely because they want to have a different space and offer a different response from others. The reality is that, with the growth of the digital market, pharmacies place increasing importance on their visual identity and invest in increasingly innovative solutions.

1. How do you see the presence of digital and technology in pharmacies?

In interior design, it is important to create a multisensory experience assisted not only by technology, but also by the digital platforms we have at our disposal. The truth is that digital is the present and future of pharmacies. Equipment such as ControlStation, for example, assists consumers during the shopping experience, ensuring their safety and well-being. Electronic labels or interactive screens are resources that are increasingly in demand. The trend is – without a doubt – to continue to integrate technological resources in the design of spaces dedicated to the provision of services and healthcare, because the market and people demand it.

1. What are the most challenging aspects of a remodel?

Everything has passed through my hands. I have worked in this sector for many years and I can say that little surprises me. What is certain is that with experience and knowledge, any surprise or setback can be easily resolved.

1. What fascinates you about the world of architecture and interior design?

In this world of architecture and design, what fascinates me most is – without a doubt – problem solving. Basically, these disciplines emerge as answers to real problems. When we develop aproject, whether we design a piece of furniture or talk about ergonomics, we are always looking to fill a need. It’s about “stimulating” intelligence, creativity and emotion to make people’s lives more practical, functional and safe. When we combine all of this with the health sector, we have an increase in responsibility. In other words, more than solving problems, we seek to improve patients' experiences by increasing their levels of safety, well-being and satisfaction.
